American Indian Education On-Line Seminar Series

We are pleased to announce that the spring semester American Indian Education on-line seminars, Best Practices in American Indian Education and Tribal/State Specific Issues in American Indian Education, will begin on January 22, 2008. These seminars are being provided in partnership between the Interwest Equity Assistance Center, the Colorado State University School of Education and the Tribal Education Departments National Assembly (TEDNA).

These seminars are 2 graduate credits.Seating is limited to 25 students. We encourage those interested to register as soon as possible to avoid delays in accessing RamCT (the CSU online course platform).

Seminar Descriptions:

Best Practices in American Indian Education:

This seminar is a survey of best practices in American Indian education. Seminar participants will be required to research and compare and contrast federal, state, tribal and privately funded Indian education projects. Based on their findings, assigned readings, class discussions, and guest presentations, participants will help develop a Best Practices in American Indian Education manual that will be used for future seminar offerings. A mix of synchronous and asynchronous delivery. Intensive use of discussion forum. Live recorded chats with American Indian education professionals.

Swisher, Karen & Tippeconnic, John. (Eds.). (1999). Next Steps: Research and practice to advance Indian education. Charleston: Clearinghouse on Rural Education and Small Schools.

Cajete, Gregory. (1993). Look to the Mountain: An Ecology of Indigenous Education. Ashville: Kivaki Press.

Other materials will be available within RamCT or students will be directed to external websites.

Tribal / State Specific Issues in American Indian Education:

This seminar is structured to provide an opportunity for individuals to interact with others interested in exploring Indian education issues specific to their tribes / states. Invitations to participate in multiple live recorded chats will be sent to persons representing different levels of government and organizational perspectives. Participant generated discussion forum. Development of a clearinghouse of on-line resources is a course outcome.

Other readings to be determined based on group needs.

Instructor:

Dr. Martin Reinhardt, research associate with the Interwest Equity Assistance Center, will be the instructor for these seminars. Dr. Reinhardt is an Anishinaabe Ojibway citizen of the Sault Ste. Registration:

In order to register for this seminar, you will need to do the following:

Print off a copy of the appropriate CSU registration form included on the Interwest Equity Assistance Center website under Services, American Indian Education Seminars, Registration/Fee Forms, fill it out completely, and submit it along with your tuition payment of $106 to: Colorado State University, School of Education, 202 Education Building, Fort Collins, CO 80523-1588

  1. Print off a copy of the TEDNA fee form, located at www.tedna.org, also included on the Interwest Equity Assistance Center website, fill it out completely, and mail it along with your payment of $150 (check or money order made payable to TEDNA) to TEDNA, P.O. Box 18000, Boulder, CO 80308
  2. Purchase required materials. You are responsible for purchasing your own required materials.
  3. Visit the following website to review helpful documents about RamCT. http://help.ramct.colostate.edu/index.aspx
  4. For new CSU students, after you receive your CSU student ID number, you will need to visit the CSU E-ID website at http://eid.colostate.edu/ to get your new E-ID number. This is not the same as your CSU ID. You will need this number to log-on to RamCT.
  5. Log-on to RamCT and familiarize yourself with the on-line seminar environment as soon as your registration has been processed and you have been granted access to the class in RamCT. https://ramct.colostate.edu/webct/entryPageIns.dowebct

Tuition and Fees:

The cost for each seminar will be $256 (CSU tuition is $106 for a 2 credit workshop, and $150 will go directly to TEDNA to help support organizational efforts). Seminar participants will also be responsible for purchasing their own materials.
