BOARD APPROVES 30th MEMBER
AND SUPPORT FOR JOM
On February 12, 2006, the TEDNA Board of Directors met in Washington DC following a National TED Forum there in conjunction with the annual Legislative Summit of the National Indian Education Association. Several Board members participated by teleconference. The Board approved four regular membership applications, bringing TEDNA's total FY 06 Regular Membership to thirty (30) federally-recognized TEDs. TEDNA President Joyce Silverthorne called it "Wonderful. We have more than doubled our first year regular membership of fourteen federally-recognized TED."
The Board also enacted a Resolution supporting the National Johnson O'Malley Association's (NJOMA's) efforts to keep the Johnson O'Malley Indian education program, which is proposed for elimintation by the President's FY 07 Budget Request to Congress. TEDNA's resolution also supports NJOMA's efforts to increase JOM funding levels, which have been frozen since 1994. JOM is one of the oldest Indian education programs; it was authorized by Congress in 1934. It is administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs within the U.S. Department of the Interior.
