Shannon County voters approve name change to Oglala Lakota County

Here, from the Rapid City Journal. An excerpt:

The Rapid City Journal reports that 80 percent of the nearly 2,700 voters in Tuesday’s election approved changing the name to Oglala Lakota County. State law stipulates that a two-thirds majority is required for approval of any name change.

The southwestern South Dakota county holds the majority of the land on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. It is named after Peter Shannon, a chief justice of the Dakota Territory Supreme Court who later helped negotiate land deals with the Lakota. Shannon isn’t well thought of among many American Indians.
